Hmm.. Playboy meets Dead Rising 2

Not sure how I feel about this news, but Playboy is teaming up with Capcom to bring content to Dead Rising 2.

Here's a bit of the press release for details:

CAPCOM® TEAMS UP WITH PLAYBOY MAGAZINE TO BRING SEXY BACK TO DEAD RISING® 2

The Magazines of Dead Rising 2 Get Saucy as Capcom Partners Up With The Legendary Publication to Bring The Bunnies Into the Game

June 11, 2010 – Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today confirmed that it has partnered with Playboy magazine to have content from the iconic publication featured in its forthcoming title Dead Rising® 2, scheduled for release later this year for the Xbox 360®, PlayStation®3 and PC platforms.
Players that discover the Playboy magazine in the game will receive a unique and special upgrade for Chuck Greene, the main character in Dead Rising 2. Furthermore, players will come across Playboy ads and billboards that will feature specially selected issues from the magazine’s 57-year history.
The new magazine system for Dead Rising 2, which will feature Playboy along with various other publications, is an evolution of the popular book system from the original Dead Rising game. Along with the special Playboy issue, there will be a variety of different themed magazines that Chuck will be able to pick up for bonuses to use to help fend off the zombie hordes along the way.
“The Sin City-type environment in Dead Rising 2, Fortune City, is a natural playground for the Playboy Bunnies,” said Seon King, Senior Director of Licensing for Capcom Entertainment, Inc.  “We have integrated the Playboy brand throughout the game in ways that bring even more life to Fortune City and add to the user experience.”

Frank West writes on walls in Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing

Nintendo Tim over at Destroyed Controller has discovered a curious wall scribbling in Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing by none other than Dead Rising's shutterbug hero, Frank West.

Very interesting.  Could this mean something or is it just an Easter Egg?

It was literally a Dead Rising paradise at Capcom's Captivate 2010 media event which took place April 14th in Honolulu, Hawaii.    The embargo has just been lifted, so new info is flying in right now.  Updated with Co-op demo video!

Captivate 2010 Trailer

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero

Here is a piece of concept art from the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive DLC set to be released sometime before Dead Rising 2.    Case Zero takes place in a town by the name of Still Creek and will provide around three hours of zombie slaying mayhem.   Still Creek's rustic desert setting seems like it'll be a nice change of pace from the first game's suburban Willamette Mall.

Co-op in DR 2?

Like Gears Of War, and Resident Evil 5, Dead Rising 2 will have co-op in single player. According to Game Informer (magazine not yet released), another person can join Chuck Greene in eradicating the zombie hordes. How will the 2nd player character look like? Is this even for real? Check out Capcom's annual Captivate in the following days, and read Game Informer, to see if its info is on the up and up for the concrete details.

Dead Rising info @ Wondercon: Where is it?

Where is the beef -- er, I mean, where is the DR 2 info? Since yesterday, there has been scarce info about this game from Wondercon. How much scarce news? Only three tweets from twitter 'detailing' the trailer, gameplay, demo and news of multiplayer that you cannot only play as humans but also as zombies. So, I expect Capcom or some other outlet to post news tomorrow (I don't know why it was not posted already)

PS

Also something about Dead Rising: Case 0 being released for the iPhone.

A Deadly Premonition you'll want to have

Dead Rising 2 news has slowed down to a trickle right now so I thought I'd give props to an Xbox 360 game I'm really enjoying right now, Deadly Premonition.

This awesome experience can be purchased right now for the low price of 19.99 at fine game retailers everywhere!

The always entertaining Jim Sterling over at Destructoid best sums up what Deadly Premonition's all about in his review found here.   Zach?!  Sssh.  We'll talk later...

In other Capcom news... Lost Planet 2 gets bundled in Japan

Microsoft and Capcom have announced that they will release a Lost Planet 2 themed Xbox 360 bundle alongside the game's May 20 release date.

Nothing too exciting here. With the usual cables and doodads, you'll receive a copy of the game, a 2GB Lost Planet 2 branded USB stick loaded with a "making of" movie and other premium content, and an Xbox media remote.

The system itself comes with a disappointingly paltry 60GB drive. Seems strange that Microsoft would choose to pair the system with such a small hard drive considering that the 250GB was just released March 11th (in Japan).

Hopefully Microsoft and Capcom will get a bit more creative should they choose to release a Dead Rising 2 bundle.

Dead Rising 2 Splatters Microsoft's X10

Some very very cool Dead Rising 2 news surfaced at Microsoft's X10 event, held this year in San Francisco. Capcom officially announced the release date of Dead Rising 2 which is August 31st, 2010 (North America), Japan on September 2, and Europe September 3rd. Mark your calenders people!

Dead Rising 2 made another appearance in playable form, this time showcasing and elaborating on the weapon customization system shown in previously released screenshots.   A newly introduced aspect of this system is the ability Chuck has to "get ideas" for new weapon combinations by looking at certain items in the environment.

X10 Tools of the Trade Trailer

Dead Rising 2: Case Zero

Capcom also plans to release a prologue of sorts to Dead Rising 2 named Case Zero.  Case Zero will be a Xbox Live exclusive and will surface sometime before the retail release of DR2 .  It is intended to bridge the events of the first game to the second.

Dawn of the De..... Dead Rising: The Movie! Directed by Keiji Inafune

This bit of news seems to have come out of nowhere. Keiji Inafune has directed his own Zombie flick based on the Dead Rising series!

The movie seems to be "loosely" based on the game, including first person segments ala the Doom film adaptation and plenty of the red stuff for you gorehounds out there.

Dead Rising: The Movie is rumored to be released later this year on Xbox Live, with a web release following.

New Dead Rising 2 Screenshots: Weapon Customization Feature

Capcom has released a few new screenshots highlighting Dead Rising 2's new weapon combining/customization feature.  Can't wait!

Paddlesaw

Is it just me or do the zombies look noticeably better in this build?

Dead Rising Now Available on Xbox Live's Games on Demand

Following up an earlier post, Dead Rising is now available for the Xbox 360 via Xbox Live's Games on Demand for 19.99.  Details can be found here. (Xbox Live Marketplace).

Frank West Covers Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom!

Capcom fighting games.  I have fond memories of feeding tokens to coin-ops such as Darkstalkers and Street Fighter II Turbo Hyper Ultimate Whatever edition at largely extinct places of yore known as "arcades".  Those days may be gone, but Capcom continues to churn out awesome fighting games for the home consoles.

Fresh from his zombie slaughtering days in Dead Rising, Frank West meets a new challenge in the recently released Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Ultimate All-Stars for the Nintendo Wii.  Frank joins a cast of 26 fighters, some hailing from Capcom properties as varied as Viewtiful Joe and Mega Man, and the others from the very popular animes by Tatsunoko Productions.

Frank has an arsenal at his disposal ranging from baseball bats, zombies, zombies in shopping carts, and of course our beloved zombie disorienting super weapon, the Servbot head.  He's covered wars, so he shouldn't have too much trouble here..... or will he?

For the memorabilia collectors out there, Gamestop offered a pre-order bonus which was a pack of 8 (12 in the full set) lenticular Tatsunoko vs. Capcom cards. Frank's featured on one of these, so you have a pretty good chance of nabbing him should you pick up a pack.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom was released January 26th in the US.  The official website can be found here.

FIGHT!

Dead Rising 2 Catch Up Coverage

A Brief History of Dead Rising 2

A low resolution video surfaced February 6th, 2009 on Youtube apparently showing what seemed to be a trailer for a Dead Rising game.  Some questioned the video's authenticity which led to quite a bit of controversy over the intertubes. Capcom officially announced Dead Rising 2 three days later on February 9th confirming that the video was indeed a very clever viral promotion.  Dead Rising 2 will be available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. A release date has yet to be announced.

Capcom has passed the developer's reigns over to Blue Castle Games of Vancouver, Canada who have worked on projects such as The Bigs and Major League Baseball Front Office Manager. Several members from the original Dead Rising team are overseeing development and Keiji Inafune will again serve as the game's producer. Blue Castle Games was chosen in part because Inafune wanted Dead Rising 2 to be a "true penultimate western game design experience".  Blue Castle Games has also mentioned that the game will retain some of it's eastern sensibilities that made the original so unique.

Not much is known regarding the plot of Dead Rising 2 at this point.  The protagonist is Chuck Greene, a former motorcross champion who is apparently searching for his daughter, Katey, in the casino town of Fortune City. Chuck being a contestant in a zombie killing hit reality show called TIR (Terror is Reality) somehow plays a role in his quest to get Katey back.

This photo shows a zombie rights activist named Stacey Forsythe.  Surely we'll find out more about her character in the coming months.  Notice the vial of Zombrex underneath the picture.  Zombrex is apparently an injectable medication used to suppress the zombie infection and was first mentioned in the viral video.

Dead Rising 2 Coverage

Game Developer's Conference 2009

(From IGN) March 27, 2009 - Capcom has been very tight lipped about facets of Dead Rising 2, with much of the information about the zombie-killing action sequel released in one press release and a few screens. We were keeping our fingers crossed that there would be something -- anything -- released about the upcoming game at GDC and luckily, we managed to glean a few little nuggets from the show. During the Platform Independent Shader Development panel, Izmeth Siddeek, the character art lead from Blue Castle Games, detailed how the development team needed to focus on creating a large number of characters that had to be lit and shaded properly on screen, as well as a number of other design hurdles. Thanks to the program's shaders, the Blue Castle team was able to create unique eye and cloth shaders, as well as skin shading that looked natural and could be applied to numerous characters and zombies at one time.

However, it was mental mill Product Manager Laura Scholl that caused the most buzz. Mentioning a conversation that she'd had with Siddeek about the use of the program, she noted that Siddeek confirmed that Dead Rising 2 will frequently track at least 800 separate clothing textures to provide the sense of unique zombies onscreen. What's more, thanks to the elements that Blue Castle are using from mental mill to quickly mass produce characters for the game engine, players could experience as many as 6000 characters onscreen during multiplayer sessions.

Capcom Captivate 2009

(From Gamespot) Capcom's Captivate 09 event featured a slew of games, but the highlight of the show was undoubtedly Dead Rising 2. The original game was one of the Xbox 360's early standouts and a knowing homage to American zombie movies, and it's hard to believe that the game is now almost three years old. Capcom R&D head and Dead Rising 2 producer Keiji Inafune has entrusted development of the sequel to Canadian studio Blue Castle Games, which was on hand at Captivate 09 to walk us through the game. Dan Brady, CEO and general manager of Blue Castle, gave us a tech demo that offered highlights of a few key features that will be in the sequel. Like in the game's predecessor, anything and everything can be used as a weapon, but the team is keen to up the ante with even more zombies and new weapons. Brady talked about maintaining the constant feeling of dread and being "out of your element."

In another post I'll detail impressions from the Terror Is Reality Capcom event sponsored by Microsoft at Ebisu in Shibuya, Tokyo.
